Robinhood started in 2013 with a landing page and a waitlist. By 2026 it was on pace for $5.7B in revenue (Q3 2026 annualized), with 28.7M funded customers and 5.2M Gold subscribers. It got there by opening 21 marketing channels in 5 phases over 13 years. Here is every channel, phase and marketing dollar behind that growth, in plain language.
Robinhood's strategy: free trades, free stock, bring a friend
Every channel did one job: get people in line, then pay them to bring the next person. According to Robinhood's 2021 S-1, over 80% of new funded accounts in 2020 joined organically or through the referral program.
Robinhood vs. its competitors
Robinhood showed up 35 years after Charles Schwab and now earns about 8x what Webull does. Full year 2025 revenue: Charles Schwab (founded 1971) $23.9B with $11.9T in client assets, Interactive Brokers (1978) $6.2B with 4.4M accounts, Robinhood (2013) $4.47B with 27.0M funded customers, and Webull (2017) $571M with 5.0M funded accounts.
What Robinhood sells: stocks first, then 11 more launches
Robinhood sold only commission-free stock trading for about 2.5 years after the app launched in March 2015. Robinhood Gold, its first paid tier, came in September 2016. Then came options (Dec 2017), crypto (Feb 2018), cash and fractional shares (Dec 2019), an IRA with a 1% match (Dec 2022), the Gold Card (Mar 2024), Legend desktop trading and prediction markets (Oct 2024), managed Strategies portfolios (Mar 2025), tokenized stocks in the EU (Jun 2025) and AI trading Agents (Sep 2026).
How much Robinhood spends on marketing
Robinhood reports marketing expense in its filings. It spent $186M in 2020 (19% of revenue) and $327M in 2021 (18%), then cut to $103M in 2022 (8%) and $122M in 2023 (7%). Spend came back to $272M in 2024 and $399M in 2025 (9%), and about $420M in 2026 (7%, annualized from 9 months). Revenue grew 3.1x from 2021 to 2026 while marketing grew 1.3x.
Phase 1: Waitlist (2013 to 2015)
Lead move: make people line up. Robinhood put up a landing page and launched on Hacker News in December 2013, where it hit #1 and got 10,000 signups on day one. The offer was simple: stop paying up to $10 per trade. Your place in line was visible, and sharing your link moved you up. The waitlist hit 50,000 in week one and almost 1M before the app shipped in March 2015. Founders ran X posts and funding press, including a $13M Series A in September 2014. Spend was not disclosed, and we found no Google ads.
Phase 2: Free stock (2015 to 2019)
Lead move: pay users to bring a friend. The offer became commission-free stock trading, and every friend you invited got a free stock. Robinhood became the first finance app to win an Apple Design Award, started Google search ads and Meta ads, opened a YouTube channel, built stock ticker pages and Learn articles, and bought the MarketSnacks newsletter in March 2019. Revenue reached $278M in 2019. Robinhood was private until 2021, so spend for this phase was not disclosed.
Phase 3: Mania (2020 to 2021)
Lead move: buy attention while it is cheap. Robinhood joined TikTok, ran its first Super Bowl spot in February 2021 (the week after GameStop) and added TV and streaming. The offer: "We are all investors" and "Your first stock is on us." Spend was $186M to $327M, 18% to 19% of revenue. Google ads peaked at 1,803 keywords in November 2020. Revenue grew from $959M to $1.82B and funded customers from 12.5M to 22.7M.
The search battle
In October 2020, Robinhood ranked in Google's top 10 for 10.2K keywords, about 7x behind Fidelity's 74.5K. By October 2026 it ranked for 188K, up 18.5x, and passed Schwab in January 2026. Fidelity is at 242K, Schwab 106K, Public 89K, Webull 12K and E*Trade 9K. Robinhood is now #2 of 6 brokers, and its gap to Fidelity shrank from 7.3x to 1.3x.
Phase 4: Reset (2022 to 2023)
Lead move: cut spend and own the audience. Marketing fell 69%, from $327M in 2021 to $103M in 2022, and paid keywords were cut more than 90% from the peak. Robinhood bought the Chartr newsletter in December 2023, adding to MarketSnacks, and later launched Sherwood News (April 2024) and Robinhood Social (September 2025). It has 1.39M followers on X, 368K on Instagram, 285K on Facebook, 245K on TikTok and 82K on YouTube. The offer was an IRA with a 1% match. Spend was $103M to $122M (7% to 8% of revenue), revenue went from $1.36B to $1.87B and Gold reached 1.42M subscribers.
Phase 5: Gold and search (2024 to 2026)
Lead move: rank for every ticker. Robinhood built one page per stock, and top 10 rankings grew from 19.6K in April 2024 to 202K in September 2026. Today 97% of its top keyword volume lands on /stocks/TICKER pages, and its lead over Webull went from 2.5x to 15x. It also launched Sherwood News, started HOOD events (17 launches at HOOD Summit in September 2026) and bought TradePMR for $300M to sell to advisors. The offer: a 3% IRA match plus 3.6% APY. Spend was $272M to $420M (7% to 9% of revenue), with Google ads at about $1.37M a month. Revenue grew from $2.95B to a $5.7B run rate, funded customers from 23.4M to 28.7M and Gold from 1.42M to 5.2M.
Where Robinhood's 2026 marketing budget goes
Robinhood's 2026 marketing is about $420M a year, and most of it pays users. Our split: Gold, IRA and transfer bonuses $110M, free stock referrals $90M, brand, TV and sports $70M, paid social on Meta, TikTok and YouTube $45M, creators and influencers $25M, app store ads $20M, Sherwood, Snacks and Chartr $20M, Google search ads $16M (measured), HOOD events $10M and other $14M. By funnel stage, that is about 56% decision, 23% awareness, 15% interest and 6% consideration. Trades have cost $0 since the start; the money moved from free stock to IRA matches and cash yield, all tied to the $5 Gold subscription.
How to use Robinhood's playbook in your business
- Build a line before you open. Collect a list before launch: a waitlist, a pre sale or a grand opening list. A strong website is where that list starts.
- Pay for the referral. Give every customer something to send: money off for them and the friend.
- Build one page for everything you sell. A page for every service, city and question. It takes a year. See our SEO service.
- Go loud when demand spikes. Spend hard in your busy season or after a big event, then pull back. See paid ads.
- Turn customers into members. Sell a membership: tune ups, priority service, a member price.
Skipping steps has a cost. Without the waitlist, launch day starts at zero users. Without referrals, the 80%+ of 2020 accounts that came organically or by referral would each have been a paid click. Without ticker pages, the search gap might look like Webull's: 12K top 10 keywords to Robinhood's 188K. Spending 7% of revenue in 2020 would have meant $67M instead of $186M, in the year funded accounts grew from 12.5M to 22.7M. And without Gold, Robinhood would miss an estimated ~$300M a year in subscriptions. Want this mapped to your business? Book a discovery call and we'll show you where to start.
